As an NRHA Professional, Russ enjoys training reining horses at his full-time training operation located in Cloquet, Minnesota alongside his wife, professional barrel racer, Nicole Ratkowski. He graduated from the University of Tennessee at Martin with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture - Emphasis in Animal Science. He has been training horses for 12 years and has worked under several NRHA Professionals. He also started and rode many cutting horses during his time in Tennessee.
